Feelin' hot, hot, hot

Everything's better when you're wet on a sizzling day like today.

Follow-up to school post: Bennett reportedly "warmed up quickly" and was excited to show me what he had worked on that first day. During our walk home he revealed, "I was kind of quiet today, Mommy. I didn't talk to a lot of people because I was nervous." I told him I get nervous, too, when I go to new places and meet new people but to not worry because the more he goes the more comfortable he'll feel.

My favorite moment was when B came out of class the second day, saw Eli waiting and gave him the world's biggest hug. You'd think those two hadn't seen each other in weeks the way they embraced! Such a sweet and surprising little reunion between the typically-fighting-with-each-other brothers... if only it had lasted the rest of the day (or even the hour).

Ping Pong March Madness

WHAT??? March Madness in August?

That's right. The Jory Reunion became Ping Pong Madness at the Depoe Bay, Oregon beach house. For 3 sweet, glorious days from Tuesday August 18th through Thursday August 20th the Jory Clan took its competitiveness to another level. When we arrived on Sunday Jenae mentioned that we should have a Ping Pong Tournament. Stephen accepted the challenge as bracket designer/tournament commissioner. Brackets were created Tuesday morning after all 12 players had a couple days to warm up. Matchups were created at random for the first day. A loser's bracket/late comers bracket was added and Stephen came up strong through the winner's bracket, facing Jim from the loser's bracket. Stephen won in a closely contested match. On Wednesday players were seeded according to their outcomes from Day 1 and there was no loser's bracket. Justin wanted revenge against Stephen after beating the recently arrived Jason in the 2nd round, but lost again in the semifinals. Jim breezed by the competition until he got smoked by Stephen in the finals. Day 3 on Thursday welcomed Bret Parker to the mix. There were several close matches. And after 4 days of being undefeated, Stephen finally lost in the 2nd round to Jason and his long arms in the longest/closest match of the week: 23-21. Jason eventually played Justin in the finals and Justin came out triumphant in another close match.

Thanks to all the tournament players: Braden, Kendra, Brett Jory, Ashley, Eric, Jenae, Bret Parker, Justin, Andrea, Julianne, Stephen, Jason, Connie and Jim! We will see if there will be another ping pong tournament at the next reunion. Perhaps a pool or bocce ball tournament???

Ps--Stephen may have had an unfair advantage warming up two months earlier at the Geddes family reunion in Morro Bay, CA :)

If any of you have any photos of the ping pong action feel free to pass them on. Unfortunately, we did not get any tournament photos on our camera.

One last note: Stephen is very happy to report that there were no trips to the ER or any major illnesses at this family reunion. Let's start a new trend :).

1st child's 1st day of school

Every prayer that B. has offered the past few days has included how thankful and excited he is to "go to school on Thursday." Here's a glimpse of that enthusiasm as we were about to head off this morning:

Eli insisted on wearing his own backpack

His first of many walks to school to come

As we approached the school, B. wanted to walk behind me and all of sudden started saying that he was scared. I'm not sure if it was seeing all the kids arriving at the same time or seeing older, bigger kids for the first time or just plain nerves, but by the time we hit the classroom his fears had turned to one very grumpy attitude. He wouldn't even introduce himself to the cute kindergarten teacher waiting at the door to meet him. And check out this Oscar the Grouch face at what I thought was the cutest little desk:

Parents were invited to stay while the teacher read The Kissing Hand
(Bennett seemed to be relaxing a little bit)

Then came big tears from the little brother who wanted to stay at school. He kept asking me to take him to his classroom. "I don't want to leave school," he cried for about five minutes. This was going to be a long walk home. . .

Until the school's construction site saved the day. Hallelujah for growing
enrollment and adding more classrooms!

You break it, we fix it

It's as simple as night and day.
No problemo, if I say so
We'll fix it up right away.

Ah yes, the lyrics I've had stuck in my head thanks to 22 hours in the car with

this guy

and this guy
(Don't get me started on Rescue Pack or Looking out for Bobos or
You're Gonna Get Your Growl
, because I can sing them all.)

Why didn't we just bag the kids' music and listen to our own?
Believe me, we tried.

Bowie got the boot from crazy kids like these
who only seemed to settle down when their music/show came on.

This poor girl put up with her noisy brothers and their
get-stuck-in-your-head music and their full volume movies pretty darn well.

Here she is at our last rest stop:
"Wait, did you just say LAST rest stop? You mean I finally get to leave this van
and that infernal car seat you keep sticking me in?"

"Wahoo!"

Ten Years Ago Today

Do you ever stop and ask yourself, "What was I doing a year ago?" or "What was I doing five years ago?" Typically it's birthdays or holidays that prompt these questions in me, but some days, like today, I wake up thinking how strange it is that I'm married with three kids, and that gets me thinking about how I got here, which in turn gets me thinking, "What was I doing ten years ago?"

To be honest, I'm not exactly sure what I was doing on August 12, 1999. I have a pretty good idea I was busy hanging out at the high school pictured above, however, preparing my little matchbox of a classroom for my first official year of teaching. That room was soooooooo small (as the classes of up to thirty-five sophomores or juniors, especially those who didn't have a desk, can attest to) and windowless, but I was excited enough to have my own teaching space that I spent hours covering the walls, decorating the boards, and preparing all the curricula for my incoming students.

What else was I doing ten years ago today? Well, I was living at the "Jam Shack" with four of the funniest girls around, so we were probably jumping on the trampoline in the backyard or eating Corn Dog Ole or watching sock puppet commercials in the basement or hanging out with the black velvet Joseph Smith painting that hung in our living room. Whatever it was, we were having fun. I think I was probably playing tennis and eating out with a boy who owned a gym, too.

Oh, and I had super short hair! That was the summer that my sister and I chopped our long hair--we're talking boy short here, people-- and had amazing tans, thanks to our little trip to the Bahamas and plenty of time poolside. I had just bought my first car, little silver Platty, who is still alive and kicking today, and I had just quit working at the BYU Financial Aid Office, a job I had had for the past six years.

What about you? What were you doing ten year ago?

Summer Sanity

With Millie born at the start of June and Bennett starting school at the end of August, I didn't really think too much about what would come between. I mean, I knew I'd be trying to survive life with a newborn and life with three kids and life with the windows open (my sincerest apologies to all our neighbors), but I hadn't really thought about how I would survive all those things.

Anyway, now that summer is passing me by, I'm realizing just what has kept me sane (or at least not quite as crazy as I'm capable of getting):

1. Doing this

a few times a week, which is really just an excuse to talk to her, her,
her and her while our kids run around the park.

2. Going here

once a week with our season passes.

3. Hanging out here

every Tuesday for Park Day.

4. Recording this

for the boys. Benito can be motivated to do anything for this show.

5. Reading these

early in the morning when Millie first wakes up to eat.

6. Going here (just started)

in the evening to work out, which is really just an excuse to talk to her.

7. Eating these

and lots of other yummy treats.

Overdue

My mom and sisters have been asking me to put up new photos of Amelia Jane for weeks now, so I finally snapped a few shots the other day. We had just returned from seeing "Harry Potter," so I'm sure the baby's eardrums were still ringing from the two thousand decibels of volume that reverberated through that theater. . . and I did find some stray popcorn kernels in the bottom of her car seat the next day. . . Other than that, she looks like she had fun at the movies, doesn't she?

p.s. MUCH cuter pictures taken by a MUCH better photographer coming soon.
