Laptop Heaven

Unlike most of our friends here in Silicon Valley, Stephen and I have always been on the slow train to technological advancement and all of its accompanying gadgets. I can hear some of you laughing right now as you remember that we're the only people you know who still own VHS tapes--and even watch them on occasion with, you guessed it, our combo DVD player/VCR. No, we've still never used DVR or Tivo; we record our shows ourselves (not on VHS, however, progress indeed!). And, yes, we see the irony in living within a mile or two of Apple headquarters for all seven years of our marriage and only recently joining the ipod generation.

We've talked about getting a laptop for years but never felt the urgency until this past week. Stupid AT&T knocked our phone line and therefore our internet out about ten days ago and still haven't managed to fix it, despite two visits from their very familiar white vans. Being without a landline is annoying but not the end of the world. We still have our cell phones. Being without internet, besides the very little you can do with Stephen's phone when it's home and charged, is catastrophic. I can't tell you how many times I've thought of something I need to check or take care of online, only to realize my hands are tied. True torture.

So as of today, we are the proud parents of our first laptop computer, which is sitting here warming my lap as I type and lazily lounge on the couch. Sooooo in love. So in love, in fact, that I can't seem to put it down and go to bed. Can't I keep typing on its perfectly comfortable keyboard and gazing into its crystal clear, 15.6 inch screen? Can't I keep looking at websites at what feels like light speed while I watch TV? Can't I keep discovering new features and conveniences that make me fall even more in love with my new baby? I may never get up from this couch again.

Slowly but surely we're catching up with all of you. Maybe seven years from now we'll finally own an iphone. But by then of course the rest of the world will be flying their George Jetson cars and asking their robot maids to check their email for them!

A little ray of Solana

It's appropriate that her name means "sunshine" in Spanish, because my nine year-old niece Solana definitely brightened up our week by staying with us. The boys were so happy to have a fun cousin to play with them, Millie was spoiled, spoiled, spoiled with lots of love and attention, and I was thankful as could be to have such a willing mommy's helper in the house.

Moments of nostalgia and that funny full circle kind of feeling crept in, however. It was strange to watch Solana feed, change and take care of my baby, when I can still remember feeding, changing and taking care of her! It brought back good memories of visiting Chico and playing mommy to Solana and her three older sisters/brother while her parents went out of town for a week. My sister and I look enough alike that by the time Jana came back in town, little one year old Solana was genuinely confused at which of us was her mom.

Super Sitter

If you're looking for a good babysitter this summer, look no further. My sixteen year-old niece, Shemaina, is spending the summer out here and looking to earn some money. Did I mention she loves kids? Or that she's the oldest of four? Or that she has loads of babysitting experience? Or that she's incredibly responsible for a kid her age? Or that she patiently plays with my wear-you-out-in-five-minutes boys for hours? Well, she does. All of the above.

She's out here until the end of August. If you're interested, give me a call and I'll pass along her number, or shoot her an email.
