This was my favorite shore excursion of all: kayaking in the Tatoosh Islands. We took a half-hour busride north of Ketchikan, followed by a half-hour boatride out into the islands until we came upon this quiet little beach with one guy and a bunch of kayaks. We were both first-time kayakers, and while we didn't flip the kayak over, although I definitely could have seen us doing that, we did have a few moments of less-than-perfect communication on which way to go and how fast to paddle. Tandem kayaking requires a good amount of teamwork and patience (boo! hiss!), which is probably why we consistenly brought up the back of the group. :)
We kayaked four miles, enough to leave our muscles pretty sore the next day, but that seemed a small price to pay for the gorgeous scenery and peaceful intimacy of seeing all the wildlife up-close in their habitats. I couldn't get over how quiet and still everything was.
After kayaking, we puttered around the little town long enough to find Ketchicandies--that a guide in Juneau had recommended to us--where they make any kind of chocolate you can think of, even boysenberry truffles.

How fun! Although I would be afraid of falling over in the freezing water. Was it pretty cold that close to the water?
Great job on not falling! :)
That kayak ride looked cold! SO COOL though that you guys got to do that and now you can say that you have not only kayaked, you have kayaked in remote islands of Alaska!
SWEET pics Jul, we'll have to go "cruisin" together sometime....it is the best thing ever!! Glad you guys had a fun vacation together, you deserve it!!
